We made up for not seeing fireworks at home on July 4th by loading up on geysers and waterfalls! Strokkur Geysir (right next to THE Geysir, which rarely – if ever – erupts now) gave us quite a continual show. Here’s the calm before the storm…and bubbling up…
…and thar she blows!
Live action shot:
The Geysir Center onsite made for a touristy but still pleasant spot to shop around and get a bite to eat, including traditional meat soup and rye bread, which was delicious! There was even a learning opportunity in the bathroom…let the snarky caption contest begin!
Next stop was Gullfoss Waterfall – one of the largest in Iceland. Glacier fed and cascading in two stages – simply breathtaking. Beautiful views from multiple vantage points – a misty wonderland. Got to put my rain pants to good use – though I was roundly ridiculed by my two traveling companions, who declined to wear theirs!
Final stop of the day was an awesome, off the beaten path find…Fridheima horse and tomato farm. They grow tomatoes all year round in greenhouses (kind of a necessity in Iceland!), yielding an average of a ton a day. Cute little restaurant and bar inside. Wish I liked Bloody Marys!!
Best. Tomatoes. Ever!!

Can’t believe we had to wear winter hats on July 4th.
I would take an Icelandic Geysir over Fireworks any day.
