We took a detour from our France journey to make a side trip to Belgium – if you have a chance to squeeze in another country, I always say take it! While waiting for one of our trains, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on our first Belgian waffle. Verdict – what you’d expect from a train station waffle. 🙁 Don’t worry – we made up for it later! Also snuck in a little train nap – gotta get up early for some of these adventures!
We strolled the canals and decided to get a lay of the land (and water) with a canal boat tour.
The tour guide claimed that this is the best place for beer tasting in Ghent – we tested him out on that later!
We were treated to some beautiful scenery, including Gravensteen Castle (the Castle of the Counts) from the water.
We also passed the Angel of Purification statue – on the outer wall of the Augustinian Abbey of Ghent; the angel must wear a gas mask due to the pollution, both physical and intellectual.
Some scenes from our stroll around town after the canal tour. We had lunch in the square – with Belgian beers, of course – and got treated to a spontaneous and adorable children’s chorus concert.
We even came across a church with spooky eyes!
